Thierry Lincou gets past John White

Thierry Lincou saved the quarterfinals from being a complete bust by fighting back from two games down against the wizardry of John White to win a 93 minute midnight marathon that was finally watched by a couple of dozen spectators, two guards dogs and a garbage truck that whistled. Even a series of questionable decisions did not deter this likeable Frenchman from his task and he was able to return immediately to playing fine percentage squash interspersed by some delicate drops that even White could not pick up.

This was a fine exhibition of well-executed squash strategies and punishing tactics. White and Lincou were each able to use every corner of the court with confidence and match the opposition's attacks with counterpunches.

If White expected Lincou to fall over after the first two games he obviously knew nothing about Lincou's thorough training schedule (he has two trainers). Once Lincou had taken the third game the odds are that White would unravel and he did, his low drives now hitting the tin and his cross court slams that were so spectacular yesterday were now rattling the tin.

These two players produced some of the best squash and most exciting rallies of the evening and while White, the world number four, never gave up, his fatigue was more evident and as the match wore on the chances were that his younger opponent would prevail. Lincou won the fourth and took a handsome lead in the fifth leaving White a mountain to climb, which even his long legs found too burdensome and at 20 minutes past midnight Thierry hit the winning shot and John White who had knocked Peter Nicol out of the World Open, and was within one point of becoming world champion, was out of this first major tournament of 2003.

At ten to one in the morning, the crowd had quickly dispersed, leaving just a memory of the brilliant touch Lincou displayed throughout the final two games. Lincou walked into the darkened court, as if to recreate the scene, then began a gentle jog around the court. As he cooled down, he was no doubt contemplating the showdown he had now created for himself with the crowd favorite, Jonathon Power, tomorrow evening.
