Power Moves into Semi Final Showdown

February 7, 2001 NEW YORK—Second-seed Jonathon Power of Toronto overwhelmed Martin Heath of Scotland 15-6, 15-5, 15-5 Wednesday to reach the semifinals at the $75,000 (U.S. ) Tournament of Champions squash tournament. Power, going for a fourth straight title, needed only 45 minutes to discard the player he beat in last year’s final.

"This is my most decisive win over Martin," said Power, at his first major tournament of the 2001 season. "He never gained any confidence because I got ahead early in each game and he never found his rhythm."

Heath feels he’s at a psychological disadvantage because Power relishes the open, attacking style preferred by Heath. Power is the only top-10 player Heath has never beaten.

"Jonathon played one of his best matches in last two years," said Power’s personal coach Mike Way of Toronto. "Martin never got into it and Jonathon’s superb strategy was responsible for that." Power meets the winner of the quarterfinal between Simon Parke of England and David Evans of Wales, seeded third and fourth respectively, which was held late Wednesday.

Top-seed Peter Nicol of Scotland is also headed to the semis and faces Paul Price of Australia. In his quarterfinal, Price defeated Graham Ryding of Toronto, ranked 13th in the world, 15-14, 13-15, 15-9, 15-7 in 76 minutes. Ryding had surprised eighth-seed Alex Gough of Wales in the second round. The semifinals are Thursday and the final Friday at Grand Central Station.
